Thank you Mel for posting, and thank you Marshall for taking the time write
a very clear explanation providing us with a better understanding of silico=
n
carbide nitride bonded shelves.
You had explained all of this in our conversation a short time back, but
having you explain it probably had more folks pay attention than how I
attempted to present the information.
FYI - I'm using Advancers in my small electric kiln and firing crystalline
glazes. I had decided to get them because of the performance of the
Advancers we use at school in our gas fired kiln. We use no kiln wash and
glaze drips pop right off. After having some glaze catchers crack during th=
e
firings and and a great deal of glaze leaking out on the kiln shelf, it was
time to spend some bucks and get the best. I was somewhat concerned with
thermal shock after reading the postings about nitride bonded shelves
cracking/breaking in somebody's electric kiln and Laguna seeming to place
ALL of the blame on the potter.
I do a relatively slow heating ramp to start (300=B0 per hour to 750=B0), but
then go up at 750=B0 per hour. They're performance is wonderful. These things
should last a lifetime, or until I drop them, even then they may not break!
