These are Students, by definition less than competent!
Copying is one of the best ways to learn to throw & decorate, in my
opinion. (Worked for me!)
I regularly assign my intermediate to advanced throwing students to
choose the piece they're most intrigued by off a poster or in a
magazine, and do their best to copy it. Believe me, it's a good way to
learn about subtleties of form and color, and if they pick something
decent, it'll be quite awhile before they even come close.
