Hello Clayarters,

I could really use some advice on this topic as well. My hubby and I are
relocating to Chicago as well and are in search of neighborhoods/areas wher=
e
the creative types live. He has checked out a couple of suburbs and found
them to be the usual mass produced cookie cutter houses with sparkly
malls....not really the type of place we would call home.

I know that there have got to be some funky areas down there where the
non-conformists congregate. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Look into Evanston. Includes Northwestern U. Great ethnic mix. Lake
Forest is very pricey but the village has a ceramics center in an old TB
hospital with massive windows, lots of light and deer in the meadow.
Oakbrook has the Terra Incognito clay center and lots of Frank Lloyd =
Wright
Houses also very pricey. There are funky neighborhoods within the =
Chicago
City Limits. Cook county property taxes are 1/2 what you would pay in =
Lake
County which is adjacent and north along the lake. I would rather be =
back
in Chicagoland than in New Jersey. Keep us posted, when you settle on =
an
area I might be able to give you some names to contact.

I think you mean Oak Park, not Oakbrook. (Oakbrook is a farther-west
suburb, full of tall corporate stuff, and a huge mall, but nothing
very inviting.) Oak Park is a lovely place, and those Wright
buildings are great.
