updated sat 24 mar 07

MudFire - Luba & Erik on sat 10 mar 07

Hi all!

Just a quick note to let everyone know that we have a few spots left in =
Lisa Orr's demo weekend workshop coming up March 23-24, as well as 4 =
spots in the Wally Asselbergh's hands-on naked raku firing workshop =
coming up April 28-29. Would love to see some of you guys here this =
spring. Please call 404-377-8033 with any questions, or to register. =
Early registration discount of $10 is available for Wally's workshop =
until March 27th. =20

Both workshops at MudFire Clayworks, Atlanta, GA USA. Brief =
descriptions follow:

Lisa Orr
Lisa will teach a two day workshop featuring demonstration of her =
historically-inspired forming process and decorating approaches. =
Participants will learn to use bisque molds to make fluid, asymmetrical =
utilitarian pottery: plates, bowls, cups, pitchers, teapots, =
candlesticks, etc. Lisa will discuss how her research into clay mold =
fragments in museums and antiquated factories led her to invent this =
unique production process. She combines pieces formed in molds with some =
manipulation on the potter's wheel.

Lisa will also demonstrate the various finishing techniques she uses to =
create incredible surface depth and complexity. Participants will take =
away new ideas for enhancing their own work using plasticene sprigs, =
polychrome underglazes, terra sigillata, stamps, slips, and layers of =
translucent glazes. Participants will also have the opportunity to use =
Lisa's molds to make their own greenware for later finishing. Class =
size 35 Fee $125, includes breakfast both days.

Wally Asselberghs

Wally Asselberghs will journey from Belgium to lead an intense =
exploration of the theory and practice of "naked raku," a technique he =
has specialized in since 1995. Participants will experience this =
raku-based process which uses sacrificial slip and glaze layers as =
catalysts to capture patterns and surface textures left behind by smoke =
and fire. Wally will present the basic naked raku approach, and also =
encourage participants to experiment with splashed and diluted glazes =
for more sophisticated effects.

Participants will apply slip and glaze to their previously bisque-fired =
work, then fire in a standard raku kiln. Works will be reduced in a =
post-fire smoke chamber and allowed to cool. The cooling slip and glaze =
crack, allowing smoke to penetrate underneath creating shading, specks, =
and irregular crack patterns. The egg-shell layer of slip and glaze is =
peeled and scrubbed off, revealing the smoke effects bonded to the bare =
clay. This process, different from using a traditional white crackle =
glaze, yields infinitely more varied results ranging from bold lightning =
patterns to soft, subtle speckling.often on the same piece. Class size =
15 Fee $245, includes breakfast, firing, all materials. Bring bisque!!!

Have a wonderful time at NCECA to everyone that's going. (I am deep =
chrome-green with envy. But will spend the week building the soda =
kiln... But next year, watch out New Orleans!)

Love all, ya'll!
