glaze fire pot placement

When you are firing a number of pots using new glazes, or different glaze combinations, how do you keep track? Do you draw a sketch with notes of each shelf, or do you write on the bottom of the pots themselves as testers? Now that I have a bigger electric kiln, I have more pots to keep track of and am curious about what system you use? Toni Smith in Ohio

Hi Toni,

I use a spiral notebook to keep track of my firings, and as I am glazing, I
make small sketches of the pots I have glazed with each color, noting the
glaze/s used. This is helpful when I am ready to do striping or overglaze
brushwork. As you know, when you have a whole lot of dipped pots sitting on
a table they can all look sort of greyish, or beige, etc. , except for the
Iron Reds, I guess.

If I have test tiles or small test pots, I will write a code number on the
bottom with a ceramic pencil.

A few years ago, I decided to learn a few Japanese characters
(kanji), and I now use some of them to mark the bottoms of my test
pots. Then I use the kanji as a key for my notes on the glazes I
used. If a test pot come out looking good, my markings on the bottom
of the pot just look like part of the art to most customers here in
southern Oregon. If you're interested, here is a sample that I just
Googled: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2046.html

Another way....at least I use it ....is by taking one column of my notepad
that I use for
my firing logs:
I draw a simple drawing of the shelving arrangements for the load, with
spaces between shelves.....then after each firing make notes of best areas for
certain glazes:
i.e. Slate has most crystals here
Buttercup most matt here

This is the most helpful...after a while, you will remember placement for the
look you wish to achieve.
Best of luck!

Hi Toni,

It depends. If I have several of the same shape that I'm glazing
differently and I need to keep track, then I'll label them with iron
oxide on the bottom and keep notes. If the shape is distinctive or I'm
only doing a single test or maybe a couple, a quick sketch in my notes
helps out. For my test tiles, they are always labelled and noted down.

Thx

Toni

I mix a little red iron ox with water and make small dots on the bottom of
the pots. If I am doing six tests start with one small dot then two small
dots, and so on. Then record what test matches which set of small dots.

If the pot is sellable then the small dots don't bother a thing.

Just my way, I'm sure there are others.

Toni,

I have little clay tablets that I write on (with a clay pencil) and place
close to the pots. That way, the pot can be sold without all of that stuff
written on the bottom but I still have the ability to see what it is that I
have done in the way of glazes and I can write it in my 3 ring binder for
future reference.

Just another way to do things.
