Over the years I've heard numerous people speak well of Adobe's
"Classroom in a Book" Photoshop series. I just did a quick google
and found copies available for between $5 (for version 5, used) up to
$35 for the current version 9 (aka CS2), new.
As many online tutorials as there are, I'm sure there are some great
ones. But I've seen some pretty poor ones, too. I prefer a book
with a good index. (Plus a CD of the exercises)
There are Lists (ala Clayart) and news groups, too, for questions and
discussion.

Paul,
If you have one of the CS versions of Photoshop, the "help" menu on
the far right of the menu bar is quite good for getting started. I
use a Lynda.com Photoshop tutorial with my high school classes and
there are "Dummies" guide books too. Most of the online tutorials are
medium to advanced level and deal with specific tricks and techniques.

What I would do is get a tutorial book that has a disk and just work through
that. Go to the bookstore and find one that has tutorials that look
interesting and fun. That's how I learned how to do it, and my old boss used to
call me a "Photoshop Blackbelt". LOL!
There's so much you can do with Photoshop and online tutorials can teach you
quite a lot, but a book will really cover all of the basic stuff, and get
you at least a little familiar with the vast variety of things you can do.
Then you can search for more specific online tutorials to figure out how to do
specific things.
Have fun!

Paul, go to Lynda.com. She has written Lynda Weinman. She has written many
highly acclaimed books on graphic design. She now has the lynda.com site
that features trainings on DVD. You can test drive the one you are
interested in. The one I did was by Bruce Heavin titled Photoshop 7 and it
was a good training CD. Good luck!

The best book that I have seen is the "Classroom in a Book" series. What
version are you using? I have old copies I can part with for versions
5.5 and CS which is 8.0 I think. I am taking off for NCECA in the
morning and can bring them with me if you are going to be there. Also,
for those at Louisville, I am going to bring along a box of old copies
of Claywork by Nigrosh. The advantage of having a book over something
online is that you can flip pages in a book easier than going back and
forth from screen to screen on the computer. In addition, you can get a
lot of info from the adobe web site. www.adobe.com. I also have extra
copies of "CIAB" for Illustrator 8.0 and CS. The best thing is to just
spend a ton of time exploring the tools.
Packing the bags for Louisville,

Hi - In my copious bookmarks I found a site with info
on photoshop. This one has lots of good stuff.
http://www.sketchpad.net/photoshp.htm
I have also found the "help" that is built in to
Photoshop to be a good place to start.
Good luck, Bonita in San Francisco.....Sunny Day for A
