Well,I tested a base glaze that I use with rutile.
What I consider a fairly basic recipe, there is some zinc in it, cone 6 ox.
I like the addition of 18% rutile the best, no other colorants added. It is a soft orange,
peach/apricot/melon color with lighter gold-yellowish flecks running through it. Became somewhat mat.
Next I will try it on a pot and if I end up using it, I'll report.
To everyone who gave me advice, thanks.

Glaze with rutile added, orange tones with lighter flecks, cone 5-6 (only tested once)
Feldspar 51
Silica 21
Whiting 24
Ball Clay 3
Zn Ox 12
Talc 12
Bentonite 1
______________
124
Rutile added: 18%
I have used this glaze for a long time, starting as a cone 9, have tweaked it a bunch.
So it adds up to way over 100.
This recipe now fires at cone 6 ox, or a high cone 5.
I generally use it as an accent glaze, with some cobalt and rutile, or copper and cobalt
and rutile.
If you test and get anything interesting, I'd like to know.
This glaze is finicky with application, I apply medium, too thick or thin and it comes out
varied. Also different temps, even in the same kiln load make for different results.

Sounds interesting. Can you post the recipe you used, and then we=20
could all try it and compare notes? Best Wishes,

I'll give it a try, any particular Feldspar? Soda or potash?

Judy,
I ran your rutile glaze through my software and this glaze is too low in
alumina and silica for cone 6. It also has a some what high expansion and would
craze on some bodies.
I redid the recipe to fit cone 6 limits and brought it to 100%. This version
has a much better expansion as well. I kept the alumina/silica ratio the
same(11.04) So if you want to try it, here's the revised recipe:
JP's revised cone 6 rutile orange Expansion 6.83(your original is 7.69)
custer 31.6
silica 26.3
whiting 14.9
OM #4 12.2
zinc 7.5
talc 7.5
-----------------------
TOTAL 100
Add: bentonite 1%
This revised version is also cheaper (.16 Cents a lb as opposed to .21 cents
a lb for original).
Regards,
June

Thank you, June.
Like some others have noted on the board, I did not receive your post in my mailbox,
had to find it in the archives. Sorry about the type. I have only tested this glaze
once for orange-tones with the 18% rutile. I also do not use it on functional
pots, and just at the rim as an accent. Although if I get it working in this
new color I may use it as the main color on a piece.
I have fired this glaze in different temp ranges wirh other colorants, from cone 5 to 6,
with different results.
