glaze settling - old bentonite

At the art center we recently had a couple of reliable, well tested for
years, glazes settle out rapidly.

Doubling the bentonite helped a bit.

We tried Magma a product from Brakers. The Magma made the glaze
gelatinous. It did not settle out but it also was to weird to be used by
our students. Glazing methods would have to change. Fired test tiles of
the Magma mix were consistent with the history of the glaze. I can relate
more on our Magma experience to those interested.

The Bentonite we were using had been in the studio for years. Noone
around today remembered having purchased it. So we bought new Bentonite
and that solved the problem. It does make sense that over the years
flocculant exposed to moisture would not be as effective.

I haven't seen this mentioned as a possible reason for glaze settling, so
thought I would throw it out there.
