glaze workshop/nceca glaze panel (aka blatant self-promotion!)

updated sun 25 mar 07

Dave Finkelnburg on wed 21 mar 07

Hi all!
If you know of someone who may not see this but may
be interested in attending one of my two-day, hands-on
glaze workshops the first week of May, would you
please pass this post along to them? Thanks! Details
are at the site below:
http://www.revivaltileworks.com/aworkshopposter.pdf
I had some real frustration with NCECA this year,
mostly because the Glaze Presentation I was part of.
Tina Gebhart (teaches at Gettysburg College, MFA from
Alfred) and Dr. Bill Carty from Alfred also spoke and
Pete Pinnell was moderator, which was great, but the
session was at 2:30 Friday afternoon, which meant I
spent most of the week worrying about and preparing
for my presentation.
People were still filing in when Pete started the
introductions and then Tina spoke, so I was stunned
when I got to the podium and found myself looking at
an audience that was literally approaching a thousand
people! I think it says a lot about the demand for
serious technical sessions at NCECA. When John
Hesselberth, and another year when Ron Roy, spoke at
NCECA, I recall their sessions being similarly
crowded.
Good potting!

Paul,
That is high praise, coming from you, and
considering how much you know about glazes. Thank
you! I figured I'd catch it for the tie...but it
seemed properly respectful of the audience...who had
to suffer through my talk, after all, just so they
could hear Dr. Carty! :-)
Good glazing,
Dave Finkelnburg

That panel was one of the best things I've seen at
NCECA in quite
some time. It's not often that you get to see actual
NEW concepts in
glaze chemistry being explained. Dave did a great
job, and you could
see how much thought and time he put into the
preparation of it-
why, he even wore a tie, so I knew he was an expert.

Hmmmm, Paul, I always thought that Dave Finkelnberg was an expert, and THEN
I saw him wearing a tie, and now I don't know what to think.

Dave,

Hurry up and write up your part of the presentation. I still have that
nagging question knocking around unformed in my cabeza. Mui importante
that I understand everything.

All three of you were very clear in your explainations, all easy to
understand and follow. My only regret is that it was so short.

Wish someone would come down here for a glaze workshop...

Hi Dave,
I think that a lot of us were grateful that a popular forum was held
at some time OTHER than 8:30 a.m.
You deserved to have a crowded hall. It's an important and
fascinating topic, and you did such a good job. It was a truly
interesting presentation. If a handout ever comes to pass out of this
discussion, let us know. It would be so helpful. I know that the
NCECA book will have it, but that's a long time coming, usually.

I personally wish that a forum such as this would take place as a
matter of course at every NCECA.

Taylor:
If you want a glaze workshop of your very own, please consider hosting a
regional conference! The Potters Council can give you the guidance, the
budget, and help you set it all up. Yeah, you'll have to do some leg work,
but it's not overwhelming.
Contact Carolyn Dorr at cdorr@ceramics.org and she'll send a packet out
explaining the whole thing.
Best,
Wayne Seidl

Dannon -
Well, dear Dave Finkelnberg isn't exactly what I would call "hip," but I'm
not sure it's fair to compare him to the Alfred ceramics class of 1910.
1955 maybe . . . . . .

Well, Vince, just think of those old pictures from Alfred, showing
the ceramics class lined up neatly at the wheels, all wearing white
shirts and a TIE. Very tidy they were, too. I expect that they
knew a bit of this/that in spite of the ties.

Dave is "dressed up" every time I see him. I think of him as one of those
former generation pottery professors who threw pots in a suit without
getting clay on themselves........... :)

Well, Vince, you're just too clever for me. I THOUGHT I was
making an observation about the irrelevance of ties/not ties. I did
not realize I was comparing Dave to anything - mea culpa.
