I have a large, almost full tank that I will have to move from MS to Chicago
some time later this year. What are the regulations please? Also are there
any tips in handling it safely? I think it is a 100lb tank.

Antoinette --

It may be simpler to sell the nearly-full tank where you are
and buy a new one where you're going. Many carriers will refuse to
move the stuff for you (or, indeed, a seemingly 'empty' container
that has already been used) because of the risks and regulations
that apply to ameliorate these risks. And if you move it yourself,
you're reducing the volume/weight of precious things that you can
tend to while relocating them.

And shipping costs on a nearly full 100# tank are significant.
Likely enough to obviate the difference between what you can sell
yours for and what it'd cost to buy a new one.

First - DO NOT MOVE A FULL TANK!

You may discover that regular moving companies will not move the tank.

Here's a link to some propane safety:
http://www.rversonline.org/02Propane.html

Here's another site that speaks to propane safety and the practice of
"venting" to release unburned gas.

You may find it's easier to sell the tank locally and buy another after you
move.

Consider a propane tank full ,half full or empty that still has fumes.

It can be a big bomb

Propane expands 100 times,, if you are in a car wreck and the tank blows up,
well I guess you get the picture

Antoinette,

I agree with Stevie on this one. You can move those tanks but you need
to transport it upright and strapped down. Can be a hassle for sure. I
would never recommend moving them in an enclosed vehicle either. As
far as I know that is illegal.

If the tank is several years old, it might be time to get yourself a
new one anyway. Sell it for the price of the propane and just a bit
more. Make it a bargain for the buyer.

My 40 lb tank is nice and shiny. I like it. I named it Snowball.

Antoinette,

Try to sell your tank to a propane company. Don't be foolish in moving it
yourself especially a full tank. No moving company will move it for you
even if it is empty and the cost is not really worth it. Think safety.
Just write it all off as the cost of moving from state to state. I know you
want to be frugal but let it pass. It is just the way things are when you
have to move great distances.

Good luck in your move and your future life in a new place with a new
propane tank!.

Thanks to all who cleared that for me. My gut feel was right about that. =
I
will leave it behind, some or the other way. And yes Ingeborg, =
relocation is
expensive. I experienced it too many times in my life. I just hope it is
worth it. Especially for my husband.
