I am going to jump in here and ask a question that's perplexing me. Why
is the next year NCECA being held in New Orleans? Mel's posting got me
thinking about the absurbity of the idea. The place has been destroyed.
Most of the people who lived there and made it what it was has
relocated permantly elsewhere (500 families moved to Charlotee, my
home). The toxic sludge that has everyone worried hasn't been cleaned
up, as well as a vast landscape of destruction. Yes, the city is trying
to rebuild, but it will never be what it once was. Yes, I know it can
use a good shot of local infusion of money and all, but what is there
else to see when one is done with the conference? Before I get everyone
riled up, please be aware that my heart goes out to the people who lost
their lives, homes and everything else and I share in most people's
anger at the lack of governmetn help and continued faulure to deal with
the situation. I'm not knocking that. I'm knocking the idea of having a
major conference in a city that's not really ready for it, IMHO.
