Mark I do like that type of handle and make most of my
handles like that
pulled from a slug of clay attached to the mug. Nice clean
feel to it
I agree.
What I object to is the rather arrogant way you state that
it
is the 'only' way to make handles.
I have seen instructors at the art centre here tell students
that there is only one right way to do things and I cringe
every time
I hear it. That approach is restrictive and does not allow
for any
individuality.
I have preferential ways of doing things.....but they are
not always the
right or the only way to do things.
Years ago, I took a class from a young man whose work I very
much admire.
I make my bowls with a small indented cut
right near the base of the foot. Once fired it isn't noticed
and it stops
glaze from running.
He very loudly proclaimed in front of the class
that the way I trimmed bowls was "all wrong" and stated
that the trimmed
foot should be one continuous line with no indentations.
This was not a crit class
just his opinion.
I've noticed that his work now incorporates that small
indent to prevent the glaze
from running off the foot.
I've never asked him what changed his mind about the "right"
way to trim bowls
but I should.
While we all have ideas and preferences about is best I
would never "proclaim"
that my way was best.
If you want to trade a mug I'd be very willing....

My pulled handles always look like crap. I honesty haven't done it much as
I prefer using extruded handles.
Just my two cents!

Dear Lisa,
I had a teacher once that made me go home and pull 100 handles ( okay I
talked her down to 50!) Anyway, she asked me to throw 10 mugs, and pull
50 handles, attach 5 to each mug. Then squash them all and recycle the
clay. It made for a long day, but it was worth it. I know you are
thinking, you've got to be kidding. But it is one of the best things
that I ever did.
Seriously ;-) ,
