advice on the word advise

updated tue 30 sep 97

Paul Lewing on fri 19 sep 97

I didn't want to distract the people who wanted to read or reply to a
posting today titled something like "I need advise", but it was just
one time too many.

People, advice (with a "c") is what you get when you ask someone to
advise (with an "s") you. Maybe it's nit-picking, but this kind of
mistake really drives me up the wall, and I'm sure I'm not the only
one. And I see these two words consistently mixed up. And please
notice that there is no "a" in consistent!

Sorry, just my pedantic rant for the day.

Consider me distracted.

If I were writing to Clayart, eager for information and perhaps feeling
somewhat intimidated because of all of the great talents and skills
represented on the list, I would be crushed to receive such a cruel
response to my posting.

I am certain *I* would have to think long and hard before submitting any
future posts to Clayart.

Let's be a little more thoughtful in the future, please.....and keep the
pedantry private.

I have to agree with Lori - it does not take much to intimidate some people
when they start posting to this group. I think we have too many on this
list already who intimidate and insult with their messages. It is not
productive to the free exchange of information.

I am a terrible speller - as are many on this list. Some times I don't have
the time to use my spell checker - my question is - whats more important -
the information or the spelling?

I notice also there are some who seem to prefer to carry on their feuds
with an audience. This ego flexing has the same effect of discouraging some
from taking part in our discussions.

I would prefer to hear from everyone - that way I will get smarter faster.

I have to agree with Ron and Lori, we are not English
lecturers of sub editors that we have to correct spelling
and grammar. I am terrible in that way that I notice every
little spelling or grammatical error, but prefer to remain
silent. I believe in constructive advice not destructive
criticism. There are two dictums that my late father told
me: one is that if I keep my mouth closed and eyes and
ears open I will learn far more, the other is that whatever
anyone has to say, no matter how stupid it may sound to
you at the time, it is important to listen to the message.
