I've just experienced yet another instance of a problem with un-
insured work. I would like some input about insurance providers for artists
to cover work at uninsured venues, such as consignment galleries and exhibitions
the auspices of the venue. I had both pieces in a recent exhibition broken,
first by an overzealous janitor before the show even opened and then by naive
teen patrons who thought it was a gift shop, not an exhibition. I was told that
I should carry my own insurance. A very cursory check around indicates that
premiums are prohibitive(at least for an underemployed such as myself). Are
there any group insurance programs out there? Is there another way to combat
this situation?

There is a simle solution to your dilema. If the exhitors are not willing
to insure work in the exhibit, don't exhibit. If the gallery is not willing
to insure work on consignment, don't consign work with them. Insurance is
part of their "cost of sales", paid for out of their percentage of the
sale. Artists/craftmen are already paying more than enough of the cost of
making, showing and selling art/craft.
