Hi everyone,
About ten years ago I purchesed some Apache clay from Mile High
Ceramics. They don't carry it anymore. Have any of you heard of this
clay, know of the molecular formula, know of where to get some, or know
of an equlivent that I can use? Thank you for your time.

Robert: I used Apache when I was in grad school at Colorado
State. It was great for terra cotta and I also used it as an ingredient
in my favorite stoneware glaze. I think it was originally mined in
Castle Rock and in fact when I was a member of Castle Clay Coop we used
to call it Castle Rock Red. If memory serves me (and lately it hasn't)
Henry Mead located the original deposit near his home in Castle Rock and
began using it in several clay bodies that he made and sold through
Castle Clay. A few years later Mile High began to sell it and changed
the name to Apache. When I moved away from Colo I began using Red Art
as a substitute. For the most part the results are OK but I can tell
you it's just not the same. Red Art is much more refined than Apache
and as a result my terra cotta is a little pasty looking. Trinity
Ceramic Supply in Dallas sells a clay called Ranger Red Shale that is
mined here in central Texas that is a dead-ringer for Apache, even has
that same yellow ochre color. I have only used it to make a few glaze
tests so I can't say anything about it's handling qualities but it sure
looks like it ought to work.
