looking for cone 04 clear glaze

updated sun 31 aug 97

I'm looking for a cone 04 clear glaze to use over redware slipped single
fire pots. Any recipes welcome, but I would like to stay away from heavy
concentrations of Colmanite/Borax, if possible.

Thanks

Try AAMCO LG10. You can't beat it for clarity and translucent depth. I
know it is expensive but the extra 25 cents a pot could be really worth it.

George, you didn't say how many pieces you are trying to put out, but a good
solution for small quantities of goods is to try one of the commercial
glazes. I use some of Duncan's clear glazes for certain applications when I
need a low temp glaze. Duncan's fire around cone 04. There are others -
ceramichrome puts out a clear glaze also - or at least did in the past. I
get ^6 clear from Mid-south Ceramics in Nashville at times when I need a
higher temp glaze. As I said, these might work for small quantities. For
larger production quantities it's cheaper to mix your own.

Good luck for finding the recipe! I've been testing since I grauduate, &
still haven't find one that can get away with Colmanite/Borax. All my Glass
in the studio have a milky uncleanable coat because of that ( don't mention
my lung) .
However I do got some tips from my past experience is to have more talc in
your clay & firing up to ^ 02 in the sitter, ( to make sure everything on
at least ^04. No chance to rebisque pieces. Firing fast instead of slow.
Wish you the best!

Ian

There is a recipe my sister have, call Ian's clear (Notr the Ian talking
here) seems working. I don't have it. I can try ask my sister and see she
still like this brother & willing to give it to me.
