Have a great time Bev - let us know all about it when
you get back. Always wanted to go there myself.

Bev---
Although it doesn't have anything to do with pottery: If you have the
time, consider renting a canal boat for a few days. They're about
50-60 feet long, with sleeping, cooking, and bathroom facilities.
It's a great way to view the country from a perspective most people don't see.
You will find canals and boat rentals virtually everywhere in
England. The rental people will give you a half-hour lesson, and then
you're the captain! You can't get into too much trouble, because the
top speed is ~4 mph. (You can walk, along the tow path beside the
canal, faster than the boat can go.) Oh, and they're virtually
indestructible. Come to think of it, we tied up by a pub every
night...and got potted.
While in Leeds, grab a train to York and then to Whitby, on the North
Sea Coast---not far. It is an old sea port town, with the ruins of a
magnificent cathedral---absolutely the most picturesque town in
England. If you want more information about Whitby, contact me off-list.

Dear Bev
There are a couple of places I can highly recommend
close to Leeds.
First is the Rufford Ceramic Centre.
http://www.ruffordceramiccentre.org.uk/
This is in a beautiful setting in the grounds of an
ancient monastery near Nottingham. It has a brilliant
permanent collection of contemporary ceramics on
display in the upstairs galleries, as well as
temporary exhibitions of ceramics and other crafts
elsewhere, so be sure to ask. They should also be able
to direct you to other smaller galleries in the local
area. It is maybe an hour from Leeds by car, or
reachable by public transport, and has cafes etc.
Next is the Yorkshire sculpture park near Wakefield.
http://www.ysp.co.uk/
This is a country estate with many world-class
sculptures set in the extensive grounds, so be
prepared for a walk. There are also four galleries on
site showing contemporary ceramics, sculpture,
installations etc. Cafes etc are on site, it's maybe
an hour from Leeds by car.
Third is a small but beautiful gallery near
Easingwold, The Lund Gallery.
http://www.lundgallery.co.uk/
It is in a farmyard in the middle of the countryside,
but signposted with brown M signs (for museum) off the
A19 between York and Thirsk. They are showing the work
of 30 potters (the Northern Potters Association annual
selected exhibition) from July 8th to 26th August.
Should be very varied and interesting. Again about an
hour from Leeds by car.
Further afield in Cumbria (maybe 2 hours from Leeds)
there is Potfest in the Park:
http://www.potfest.co.uk/
This is a selected ceramics fair of 100 potters which
is on for 3 days - July 27/28/29th. See website for
details.
In Leeds itself there is the City art gallery:
http://www.leeds.gov.uk/artgallery/
and the Craft and Design centre:
http://www.craftcentreleeds.co.uk/
If you visit either of these places they should be
able to direct you to many more small galleries in and
around Leeds.
Hope you have a stimulating visit!
Regards, Sylvia
