-Jim, Three thermocouples??? when did they started putting
that in the
kilns?
----------------

Three-zone has been available for about seven years on the
Bartlett and Orton controllers. That feature is built into
the controllers used on the larger kilns (not the little
table-top models).

Though three-zone is available, it seems that most people
prefer single-zone. There is less to go wrong. And the
typical electric kiln heats evenly with only one
thermocouple.

The 3-zone option is available from all kiln manufacturers,
because 3-zone is hardwired into the Bartlett and Orton
controllers. For 3-zone, the controller is configured
differently at the factory (that takes about one minute),
and the relays are wired to separate thermocouples instead
of to one.

By the way, if you ever replace a thermocouple in a 3-zone
kiln, do not mix up the thermocouple wires. Otherwise the
system will shut down with an error code.
