Frank --

Except that a recipe is not an
'artist's work.' The manner of
expression of a recipe may be,
and the manner of expression can be
protected -- hence Beard's Book
of Basic Fish Cookery is protected,
but I could post a recipe from
the book without violating
the intellectual property
rights of the author's estate.

we are clear on copyright of formula.
that is a given. it is just a list of ingredients.

but, when the authors ask you not to re/publish, that should
be respected. and, if you do not want to give away a new
idea, so be it. that too should be respected.

and, the info in ron and john's book is totally related
to the list of ingredients.

they are big boys, and can defend themselves.

it is, just as moderator of clayart, i am careful
to respect members wishes.

and, that would be true of anyone posting on clayart.

tom buck has always been concerned about copyright and
the internet. he thinks the rules and obligations are very
fuzzzzy.
i agree. so, i try my best to be respectful of others property.
i wish that many others would do that too...but some
just don't give a damn. it becomes a free for all, like
kids and u-tube. anything goes.

many on this list feel that artistic integrity is a right and
should be honored.

If you like something, please pay for it if you can: buy a pot, buy a book,=
take a workshop. Please support a living potter or artist. [ie, not when t=
hey are dead! ;-)]

Just for the record- "Under the old U.S. copyright law, an artist work could
be pretected for a maximum of only 56 years. The new law, which applies to
works created after January 1,1978, extends protection to the life of the
artist plus 50 years." So it really isn't a problem across the board!
