Deb,
The best bet for a solid connection every time is to bite the bullet and
pay the price to Verizon. On the other hand, if there are any WIFI host
spots in and around the Courthouse, you MIGHT be able to log on there.
But that would be very iffy, and if you have important court stuff to
deal with it's not a good plan. Go with Verizon.

Bite the bullet and buy Verizon's service. It worked well for me all
over the country until I had to switch (after being informed by Verizon
that they will not support me where I moved in Maine ...throwing away a
good $200/month customer??! Can you hear me now? Fools!).
If your job is at court, you use the laptop in court and you need
internet service in court, then it's a business expense, and you can
write it off.

Have you tried your laptop in the building to see if it has wireless
internet?
If the building that houses the courtroom already has internet (it very well
may) you might just have to establish a connection, as you would at
Starbucks or a hotel.
If the building has DSL, but no wireless, you might ask the IT guy if you
can purchase one for them to install - they aren't expensive, under $50.

with them) and it would cost me $70 a month for broadband and limited

Deb,
Just make sure your plan through Verizon would give you enough internet time for your needs (i.e. limited internet access) and if you jump to the next plan the price can go up quite a bit.

I travel out west every summer, and this summer for the first time I have
Internet access for my laptop via my Verizon cell phone. I already had
Internet access on the cell phone, and it cost an additional $15 per month
to be able to use the phone as a modem for my laptop via a data cable. It
works amazingly well. The signal can be too weak for a phone conversation
and yet I have Internet access that is a lot faster than dial-up, and when
the signal is strong the broadband is faster than my DSL at home. If you are
only going to use this while you are in court, I can't see how it would be
worth it, unless you spend a lot of time in court. For me, it has been very
worthwhile.
