For those of you that are interested in tile, you might want to check out=
=3D
a=3D20
new forum that I recently added to forumotion. I searched for a good, =3D9=
1=3D
active=3D92=3D20
forum and couldn=3D92t find one, so, I started one. (yes, its still brand n=
=3D
ew)
If anyone knows of a good and active forum already out there for tile mak=
=3D
ers,=3D20
let me know! Would much rather join one that is already active=3D85..
I checked with folks at the tile specific sites like Tile Heritage Founda=
=3D
tion and=3D20
they didn=3D92t seem to have much interest as I am sure that they are alrea=
=3D
dy=3D20
busy with lots of other stuff. Even tried with the handmade tile folks i=
=3D
n=3D20
Minnesota but no real reply there either.
So, it=3D92s up and running and if you have experience in tile making, the =
=3D
site will=3D20
need moderators as that is the key to a really good forum!
Check it out and join if you have the time!

About me; I have been designing tile for 12 years and actually producing =
=3D
my=3D20
own product for 5. I started as a wood carver and mold maker and one day=
=3D
=3D20
decided to produce some ceramic tile for myself. Then I was hooked.... =
=3D
I=3D20
specialize in water fountains and fire surrounds.
On another note, the good shoe topic.
Most studios seem to have concrete floors and if you live in a place wher=
=3D
e=3D20
winter shows up, you will have to agree that cold winter floors take a hi=
=3D
gher=3D20
told on feet than do summer floors. My father-in-law installed a radiant=

o=3D20
had forced air. He finally got around to it on a recent cold day here in=
=3D
Kansas=3D20
City and I can=3D92t tell you how much difference it made! I was amazed! =
=3D
I left=3D20
after working on dies for 6 or 7 hours and my feet did not ache=3D85 It=3D=
92=3D
s just=3D20
something to think about. For existing studios, they sell relatively che=

ap UL=3D20

=3D
after=3D20
some kind of primer/binder is applied to the existing floor), then add an=
=3D
other=3D20
inch of concrete over that. These get installed only in places where you=
=3D
=3D20
regularly stand and work.
Also, I am just over six feet tall and I find that raising the height of =
=3D
standard=3D20
working tables by about 6 inches seems to help my back. Being hunched ov=
=3D
er=3D20
any more than you have to be is a killer for most backs and mine in parti=

cular.

David,
I don't know how accomplished I am, but I do know that experience has=3D20
taught me one thing; I have more to learn than I presently know. Always!
I take,,,, and I think,,,,, I understand your points.
'enough meaningful content' - So, its the internet, more information than=
=3D
you=3D20
need is better than a lack thereof, right? Who decides meaningful conten=
=3D
t=3D20
anyway. Wink.... One of those eye of the beholder kinds if things...
I have been on and off of Clayart over the years and to be honest, unless=
=3D
I=3D20
had a very direct question, there was never very much interest in tile. =
=3D
Go do=3D20
a search on the word 'tile' in the threads, you will see. Do another sea=
=3D
rch on=3D20
anything related to tile and find the same thing,,,, not a whole lot.
I have however received some great information from Clayart-ers and=3D20
appreciate the input of some very talented folks!! So, thanks, as I just=
=3D
=3D20
happened to have done in another thread yesterday.
When I started in tile, other than a few books, there wasn't much out the=
=3D
re=3D20
and some of the books were so elementary, folks with even the least bit o=
=3D
f=3D20
imagination could have figured it out on their own. Some of the books we=
=3D
re=3D20
however - GREAT! (I might help to know that I am an Engineer by trade but=
=3D
=3D20
the stereotypical Acquarian (sp?)) I tried to contact nearly all of the =
=3D
existing=3D20
tile makers out there, all but three of which, didn't even reply. I made=
=3D
a point=3D20
right then to NOT be that way. I am happy to share all of the informatio=
=3D
n,=3D20
experience, and 'how to' that I have. I live just north of the KCAI here=
=3D
in=3D20
Kansas City and had a group of students come to me for instruction on mol=
=3D
d=3D20
making. Was only too happy to share that info.=3D20
As for me personally, I am far more interested in the process of tile des=
=3D
ign and=3D20
the artistry thereof than ever being a large or small tile manufacturer.=3D=
20=3D
=3D20
Translated, I have a day job with benefits.=3D20=3D20
Tile making for me is a walk back through history. Every time I pick up =
=3D
a 100=3D20
year old tile and think that every hand that touched this thing in manufa=
=3D
cture=3D20
is now gone, at a minimum, that proves that their art is at least still h=
=3D
ere to=3D20
be enjoyed and they are somehow, still alive and still with us.=3D20=3D20
Tile also tells a great story of everything from changing taste of the ge=
=3D
neral=3D20
public to important places, dates, times of major world occurances. Over=
=3D
the=3D20
years, I have spent twice as much on artifacts whether tile or tile relat=
=3D
ed,=3D20
than I have ever made from the sales of my tile. Its likely to continue =
=3D
that=3D20
way to the raised eyebrow of my spouse. LOL
So, still, I don't know what I really have to offer Clayart but my somewh=
=3D
at=3D20
accomplished methods of mold making, the gadgets that I make based on=3D20
necessity and a pretty fair knowledge of tile makers in the US that parti=
=3D
cularly=3D20
held high the standards of the Arts and Crafts Movement. I would suggest=
=3D
=3D20
that potters by deninition are still doing this.
My intent with another forum was certainly not to take away from anything=
=3D
=3D20
here! Clayart is a holistic place and therefore a great place to get inf=
=3D
o in=3D20
general but I have to say, sometimes, I just wanna talk about tile.... H=
=3D
aving a=3D20
place to do that, doesn't hurt anyone as far as I can tell.
Now, I have to go off and pay for some Lithographs I just bought on Ebay =
=3D
of=3D20
Osborne designs for some Low Art Tiles that I was lucky enough to win....=
=3D
Yes,=3D20
that eyebrow is up, staring at me from across the room - I am probably in=
=3D
=3D20
trouble! Again..... See, if you were a tile freak like me, you would be =
=3D
giving=3D20
me a high five right now....... and ducking as the shoe came at you from=3D=
20=3D
across the room....
Happy posting!
