I am a ceramic sculptor and I also have an interest in folklore. I
will be beginning (hopefully ASAP) a profile and field study (that will
eventually belong to the library here at UNC) on an African American
ceramist or sculptor in the Piedmont area of NC. The only problem is that
I'm having problems locating one. Most potters around here tend to be
Anglo. So, if anyone has any ideas, suggestions, or would like to
volunteer, please contact me.
Thanks so much for your help.

Alyssa,
I do not know any African American ceramist in the Piedmont area of N.C. BUT
I think you should contact the POTTER's MUSEUM in Seagrove ( if you haven't
already) and you might try Dave at the TURN N BURN Salt Glaze
shop/studio/gallery in Seagrove as well, he seems to know everything about
all the potters in the area.
Lastly, you might want to reference ROBERT C. LOCK, author of THE TRADIONAL
POTTERS OF SEAGROVE, N.C.
I suspect you have studied the relationship of African American history
regarding the face jugs.
Good Luck! Keep me posted on your success.

Dear Alyssa,
Winton and Rosa Eugene are African American potters working in the
upper piedmont of south carolina, they were somewhat self taught till
recently I think . The work was functional ,but Ithink they have recently
started making sculprural forms.
I got there address from a ex.catalogue , Craft of the Carolinas
1994 organized by the NCAC and the SCAC and the Gibbs Museim in Charleston.
Hope it helps,
Winton and Rosa Eugene

Try contacting the Triangle Potter's Guild to see if there are some
African-American members. I remember seeing a few black folks at the
David Shaner talk at Duke University a couple of years ago, so you might
also try the Art department at Duke.
