Does anyone out there have some suggestions on purchasing a kiln for in
home use?
If you have a kiln that you like and it is dependable, please send me a
message. Thank you,

Cheryl:

I purchased a used L&L kiln last summer, and I really like it. I am
aspiring as well, and my knowledge was limited. I purchased it from
a woman who is part-owner of a clay studio here where I live
(Manassas, VA). Part of the deal was she'd help me with my first
bisque and glaze firings - and sure enough, once I had it wired up
and ready to go, she told me how to use the kiln's controls and how
quickly to take up the temperature.

I hope that helped...

So... I'm thinking about getting a kiln. A bunch of y'all suggested that
if I want to start making glazes I might could find a used or small kiln for
testing. I just found a kiln listed on craigslist in my area and I was
wondering if anyone had any opinions on this type of kiln, or what I should look
for if I go to look at it. Also, is that a good price? It seems a little high
for the age of the kiln, but I have no idea. It also comes with kiln
furniture, so it may very well be a great deal.

When I talked to the guy selling it, he didn't know when or if the elements
had ever been replaced but said they "looked good", and that they'd fired it
up to make sure it still worked and it did.

Anyway, here's the listing.

I'm not sure about the kiln, but the wheel is over priced. You can get a=
new
one for about $550. If you want the kiln, see if they'll take a lower =
price.

Kiln - I could buy any day for $200-300
Looks like it has been well used -

Wheel - $300-400

Just my opinion.

Leigh -
$625 seems high, even a full-sized toploader like this one. It's a good
indicator that the price they are asking for the Clayboss wheel is $125
higher than what www.clayking.com is currently selling them for brand new.
You can see some damage to the inside rim of the kiln in the photograph.
The seller probably does not realize that all of the electrical components
are always corroding, whether or not the kiln is being heavily used. At
that age, if the kiln shell and refractory are still in good shape, the kiln
is probably worth bettween $400 and $500.

Yes, I realized that the wheel was overpriced as I have seen the same one
for as little as ~$500. I also saw the damage to the rim, and I thought the
bottom looked cracked or something. So you are saying maybe 4-500, and Larry
is saying 2-300. Would that be including furniture (assuming it is in usable
condition)? And would a cracked bottom and damaged rim be fixable? I
believe I could get new elements for this, but I would certainly contact the
company first to be sure.

Thanks for the input!

Thanks to everyone who responded to my kiln question. You were very
helpful! Here are the other three local Craigslist options for kilns and I was
wondering if I could get your opinions on whether any of them were worth looking
into:

Any of them look worth pursuing? Sorry if I am bugging you guys!

Probably the L&L would be the best, but of course it is the most expensive
of the lot.

Thanks again!

I currently have a Cress cone 6 manual kiln. I use it for bisque firing
and to fire China overglazes. I take my pots to the potting school to
fire my cone 6 glazes. I would like to buy a programmable electric kiln
about the same size but cone 10. My current kiln is 30 amp with an
inner chamber of 17.5 inches wide X 22.5 inches tall. I would love to
be able to use my kiln shelves and not have to hire an electrician to
rewire the house. My kiln is 75 feet from the main breaker box and the
larger wire needed for a 40 or 50 amp kiln is very expensive. =20

I found an Euclid kiln that is from a company in Canada. It is cone 10,
17.5 X 22.5 with 3 inch brick, 30 amps, and has a Bartlett V6-CF digital
controller. Does anyone know anything about these kilns? Does anyone
have any suggestions for another medium size kiln?

Thanks,

Judy Smith

Don't know about their kilns, but I get all of my replacement elements for the 5 kilns I maintain for the city from Euclid's.
They have always been good to work with.
