OK, a really off the wall fun question.

I have some bowls that were bisqued before
the move. Today I gave them a good scrubbing
under the faucet and have set them in my warm
office to dry. When I walk in the room now I can
smell them. Kind of an earthy smell just like
when glazing.

Obviously there is some interaction of the
bisqued clay with water that is resulting in
gaseous products being released.

Any idea what is chemically going on here?
