95% of our work is bisqued in an updraft gas kiln. The nice thing about
gas kilns is they're always "venting" -- just keep a nice, clean flame with
plenty of feed air. In many ways, I think I get a cleaner bisque in the
big kiln than in the electric (and I keep the kiln vent motor going
throughout electric firings, bisque or glaze).
(PS -- Re: Soaking: I definitely agree with Steve Mills about managing
your firing rate to gradually peak out (I always think of it as reaching a
plateau, or stalling) at the top of the temperature curve. It's usually
not hard to sustain that line out a bit if you want --- just keep an eye on
the cones! Remember: as long as you're adding heat to the kiln -- even if
the thermometer says the temperature's gone down a little -- more heat work
is being done.)
Best to all,
