Hi,
We have been using UPS since they started in Canada and have never had to =
put
in for an insurance claim, we had coverage on all pottery shipped.
As we phone UPS for a cost on each shipment, so that we know the amount to
charge our customer before we send. Some weeks ago I phoned and was asked if=
the
parcel was going from business to business and what was the contents? I =
informed
the person I was speaking to that it was pottery and was going from our =
studio
to the customers home address and to be charged to our account as we have =
always
done.
The UPS person informed me that they could not insure the contents as it =
was
=22Hand Made Pottery=22 and was not going to a business address, so I asked =
to speak
to the supervisor and was told that if it was =22Manufactured China=22 and =
going to
a business they would insure it .
After getting off the phone I thought I would try a different approach and
phoned UPS again, this time I told them it was =22Manufactured Stoneware=22 =
and gave
our customers business address so
that it was going from =22Business to Business=22. They gave me the cost =
plus
insurance and picked
the shipment up that day.
Since then we have shipped to other customers using the same approach, and
charged to our UPS account. No problem=21
I might add that we do not agree with UPS's discrimination between a =
small
studio pottery and a china manufacture, (assuming the packing is adequate) =
But
they may be loosing money having to return to a home address if no one is =
home.
However after checking and trying out other carriers we have found that the
service and cost have always been good with UPS.
Enjoy,

John,

Actually in tax parlance, manufacturing is a term that refers to changing
the chemical state of the materials used, so American tax people consider
that you ARE manufacturing, even if you hand produce 3 pots a year.
