looking for a needle tool

updated fri 16 oct 98

About four years ago, someone at NCECA was selling plastic handled needle
tools. I have misplaced three of the four I had and sure would like more.
Does anyone have any info if they are available anywhere now? I have
checked just about every catalogue I have and cannot come up with anything
but the wooden handled ones or the heavy duty metal type. Rather than
clutter the list, feel free to e-mail me directly. TIA

I found my plastic handled needle tools at a university bookstore. if
there is one near you, you may want to check it out. They were normally
over by tools needed for dissecting things in science classes. Just a
thought. becky glasscock

Lori-

You might try a crochet hook -- a very fine one - perhaps about a # 13 or
14. Just grind off the hook and it will last for years . I like them as
the point is fine and doesnt' " burr" up the edge you are cutting off. It
is reasonably heavy enough in the handle too. I like the rounded end to
make lines in the wet clay -- near the top of mugs etc etc as the groove is
deep and wide enough not to disappear with glazing.

Too right, my favorite is a microscope-kit leftover from my lost youth.
Also look around model/hobby shops for a "pin vise" ...kind of like a tiny
drill chuck on a stick. I think X-acto makes one.

Lori,

You can make your own handle for a nice slim needle tool using FIMO, the
polyclay that you bake in the oven to harden. I have often used this to
make "parts." Most recently, I made toggles shaped exactly to my liking to
secure a cover on a chair...very strong, and goes through the washer &
dryer beautifully.

Kia Ora!
My favourite needle tool which I have used for over 20
years is a dental tool plain and unsharpened it has a thin point and is
of bronze type material, ( not sure what it is but it does not rust even
when left wet for a long time).
I get quite neurotic if I mislay it.
