looking for a text search tool

I collect "things", call me a packrat if you will but there you are.

Among the things I've collected are the Clayart Log files.

Almost Every one, dating back to January 93 (greedy bastard!). I'm only
missing November and December, 1995 (if anyone has them......)

Being over 80 Megabytes (25 MB Zipped.) they are rather ungainly to search.

The find tool in W95 is very good but I'm looking for something better, more
intelligent and preferably free (or cheap).

Any of you "day job" programmers out there searching code for year 2000 bugs
have any ideas? Librarians? Researchers?

If anybody's interested in these files, send a SASZD (Self Addressed Stamped
Zip Disk), Belgian postage.

Sylvia,

>>It's probably not what you're asking for, but I found a neat feature in
Netscape Communicator 4.05. Under the "Edit" menu, is a search tool that
lets you search all the messages in the mail directory looking for a
particular text string. I typed in the words "fountain pump", and it
brought up 15 different clayart archive files that contained those words. I
doubt that it would work on zipped files, though. <<

Thanks but that would probably only work if I were using Netscape as my
mailer. It also sounds limited in a similar way to W95's Find tool. I can do
the same in Outlook (my mailer) but it's a lot slower than the Find in W95's
Explorer.

Also several have written regarding the archive sites, FindMail, DejaNews,
Reference.com, etc. Thanks for the suggestion, They're great but none of
them go back further than '96.

I've got all the monthly logs, minus 2, going all the way back to Jan 93 on
my hard disk and am looking for a good tool to search them.

Russel (still looking)

Russell,
The Clayart Log Reader might do the job. It is shareware and is available at
http://art.sdsu.edu/ceramicsweb/ under software.
Hmmm, my first to-do for the day--send off a check for this shareware.
