unwanted drips

I have a glaze I absolutely love BUT it isn't very forgiving with drips.
Many of the drips big or small show on the fired project. I dip the work
and then spray color over it. I don't want to spray the base coat too be
cause it takes to long. Is there something I can add to the glaze so it
will run off of the dipped pot more smoothly. Would a CMC solution help
with this? If so, how much do I add to my a gallon of glaze?

Hi Sue,

Part of the problem here is the inability of the glaze to smooth out (dare
I say properly) at top temperature. This has to do with the viscosity of
the fired glaze. Normally the solution is to reduce the alumina content
enough to let the glaze flow better. If there is enough clay in the recipe
it could be a simple mater of reducing it till the dips smooth out enough
for your sensibilities.

The proper way to do this and best retain the characteristics of the glaze
is by calculation and the unity formula.

There may also be some material in the glaze which is adding (in an
application sense) to the problem - it may be possible to reduce or
eliminate the offending material using the molecular approach.

What I need is the recipe and firing temperature (cone) you are firing to.
Just contact me off list if you prefer to keep your glaze confidential.
