Dear Friends:
I discussed kiln insulation with John R. Hohenshelt, president of
Paragon, and he was interested in your comments. However, he needs more
information. I would appreciate your opinion on the following:
1. Why do potters want more insulation in electric kilns? (Higher
temperature? Energy savings? Cooler outside kiln surface? etc.)
2. How much insulation do you want?
3. Do you mind slower cooling?
I will make sure John sees your comments. We appreciate your input!
Thanks,

Dear Mr. Howard,
I'd love to tell you about my dream kiln. I fire
earthenware and majolica and bisque in mine. I would
like more insulation in order to make it fire more
efficiently and to help it cool slower. It needs to be
short, wide with easily replaced elements. Am I asking
too much? Thanks for asking and letting me dream. . .--

Thanks for asking what potters want in an electric kiln.
I'm glad to know Paragon is interested.

First - Slower cooling. I now have to 'fire down' by turning the kiln
back on during cooling to keep large bowls and platters from cracking.
Second - Energy savings.
Third - Cooler kiln surface and kiln room.

Whatever combination of brick/board/fiber it takes to significantly
increase insulation. Wall thickness is a concern because kilns still
have to fit through doorways and have reasonable stacking space,
so brick backed with fiber would probably be the most space efficient.
