stacking greenware in bisque

At the Hui No'eau art center on Maui, a little vermiculite is put between
pots as they are stacked. This does two things. It lets the heat get to
the bottoms of the upper pots in the stack, and it disperses the downward
pressure from the upper pots over a wider area of those below, thus
reducing warpage.

After the firing, as the pots are unloaded, the vermiculite is dumped into
a waiting pail, to be used in the next firing.
