HELP!
I am finishing up at the community college this summer with my AFA. I was
amazed and surprised to find that my husband is okay with me applying at a
couple of universities that are fairly far away.
I appreciate his support so much because I know how many changes it will
mean he will need to make. His mother is at home and has been ill for some
time.
SO, to make sure that I make the most of his effort and support I want to
make the best choice that I can. My main choices are: University of North
Carolina, at Charlotte, Greensboro and Asheville. There are also some
private colleges in and around those areas but they don't seem to have the
course options of the larger schools but they are still possibilities. All
of the schools are over an hour's drive, but less than two hours.
And to explain more about myself I am a handbuilder, mostly sculpture. I
exhibited and sold my work for about six years before going back to school.
I want to do a little mixed media type work, I like metals too. Ceramics is
my main interest and where I see myself working down the road. Oh, yeah I'm
over forty too.
Does any one have any experience with these schools? Or does anyone know the
instructors, anyone that graduated from one of these schools?
Any recommendations?
I am visiting the schools but just like a job, sometimes what you see on the
surface doesn't last past the first few days. (Some times that's good and
sometimes that's bad)
I'm feeling timid about my work too, I don't know how it will stack up
against the young wild imaginations.
Do any of the professors out there have any suggestions?
Especially for the portfolio interview?

Celia,
check with your art department to see when the next open portfolio day is, that
is when all the art schools come to an area school near you. When my daughter
went through this with the portfolio that she had at the end of high school, it
was a terrific learning experience. after the second review, she began to see
exactly what the art school reps were looking at and for. also they told her
where she was strong, and where she needed to augment her portfolio.
when we went to the schools to look at them, she would just walk up to people
and ask what they thought about the school. it was a really good way to find
out what the teachers were like to see if it was a good fit for her.
go talk to high school art teachers and find out which schools they have kids
attend, the kids always come back and visit so we got lots of good feed back on
the schools.
I know that it is probably accross the state from you but East Carolina has a
really good art department with a good clay studio.
and remember what you may lack in "youthful wild immagination" you will more
than make up for with "mature life experience" to pull ideas from. I went back
to get the art courses in my 40's too, and the experience was so good that I am
thinking about getting an MFA.
