I've read a few posts where people claim that they sand outside with their
back to the wind. I suggest that people should instead sand with the wind
coming side on, as turning your back to the wind will cause a wind shadow
effect, i.e. a partial vacuum, where the dust will concentrate rather than
blow away. I take the point that each of these posts has mentioned that the
authors use dust masks as well, but the dust will settle on the individuals
clothes. When finished keep the wind side on and dust off before taking the
mask off.

Even outside, I use a respirator for sanding clay - one that is approved for
what I am doing. It is simply not worth the risk - and I love the looks that
I get sitting out on the lawn with a mega-respirator on.
