What is the ratio for substituting cobalt oxide for cobalt carbonate? I've
read and heard that you use half as much cobalt oxide in a recipe when using it
in place of cobalt carbonate. I've also heard of a 2:3 parts ratio.
Can manganese carbonate be substituted for manganese dioxide, and if so, what
would be the ratio? I don't think that I have ever seen manganese carbonate in
a recipe before...it's always manganese dioxide.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Dear Dana Henson,
I have calculated for you the following results :
1) For Cobalt :
100 g of Cobalt oxide (Co3O4) gives 96,57 g of CoO (Cobalt basic oxide)
100 g of Cobalt carbonate (CoCO3) gives 63 g of CoO (Cobalt basic oxide)
Cobalt basic oxyde is what you need in your glaze.
So you can subtitute 1 part of Cobalt oxide by 1,53 part of Cobalt carbonate
and if you reverse the calculation,
You can substitute 1 part of Cobalt carbonate by 0,653 part of Cobalt oxide.
2) For manganese :
100 g of Manganese Carbonate (MnCO3) gives 61,74 g of MnO (Manganese basic
oxide)
100 g of Manganese dioxide (MnO2) gives 89,87 g of MnO (Manganese basic
oxide)
Manganese basic oxyde is what you need in your glaze.
You can substitute 1 part of Manganese dioxide by 1,456 part of Manganese
carbonate
And if you reverse the calculation,
You can substitute 1 part of Manganese carbonate by 0,687 part of Manganese
dioxide.
You can try these modifications in you recipes, this chimical calculation
will give the same results.
I hope my help gives you a new experience,
You can visit my site : http://perso.wanadoo.fr/smart2000/
It's a french ceramic site written in French, but there are also pictures if
you don't speak french (joke). You can ask me other question about glazes
calculations as you want.
Cordialement,
