looking for ^6 slate like glazes

Greetings

I am looking for a matte or low sheen glaze suitable for
sculpture work. I am trying to find a texture/colour that
resembles slate.

I would prefer a black glaze, but this is often difficult to
develop. Dark earthen colours ranging in grays, greens
or blues would also work very well, or even better!

I intend to use this glaze to enhance textures in my
sculptures by rubbing or brushing the glaze into highly
textured areas, and then sponging away excess in the
surrounding area. And, perhaps leaving a very thin trace
of glaze in surrounding areas.

I use an electric kiln, fired to cone 6 with grogged cream
or red coloured clays.

Any suggestions where to start, or where to look would
be appreciated. I've read through the archives, and did
not see what I am looking for. That does not mean they
are not there ;-)

Thanks, Al

You can try two bases:
from Behrens:
Stony fissured Glaze:Cryolite 33
Ultrox or zircopax67
You can add colorants if not it will be broken white. do not put it near
the element of the kiln.

The second option is Ball crawl 50 nephalyn S
50 Magnesium C.
Try to apply thin and thick to see the difference.
You can try to add ball clay up to 20to make it softer
Good luck

Here's a glaze I was fooling around with in my glaze class. I would only
recommend it for non-functional work

Murtha's Soda Ash =906 reduction

Cornwall Stone 38.0
Soda Ash 35.0 Use hot water to dissove ash
EPK 19.0
=46lint 8.0

Using 3% copper carbonate will produce a very metallic gun metal surface
with some red showing through.

Someone in my class sandblasted some of the surface off to reveal copper
red underneath.
