Gail,
In over 30 years of working with clay I have never soaked my bisque
load. I fire slowly, so that the bisque load to cone 06 takes as long as a
glaze firing to cone 5 to 6, about 10 hours in my Skutt electric kiln.Time
varies with the amount of ware in the kiln or the number of shelves. Each
additional shelf adds 30 minutes to the firing.I also allow 36 hours before
opening and unloading my kiln.
I probably own close to 100 books dealing with ceramics, not to mention
various periodicals. I have never seen a mention to soak bisque in any
text. Listen to Mel and Vince. Mia in still overcast ABQ where 1000
balloonists have effectively been grounded by the weather.
