looking for ben pink clay

updated sat 4 nov 00

I am looking for a source of a clay called: Ben Pink Clay or sometimes =
Benpink Clay.

I have the analysis which comes packaged in Matrix, and have written Rick =
Malmgren (who supplied the information to Lawrence Ewing).

We had a supply here at the college (Richland College in Dallas, TX) that =
was originally purchased sometime before I came on board as a faculty =
member (18 years ago), and now that supply is dwindling. I was hoping to =
find a place to purchase more, and also, to find more information about =
the clay.

Any and all help appreciated,

Thank you,

Fred, Benpink was mined by the Kentucky-Tennessee Clay Co.,
but I don't know if it's still in production.
Trinity Ceramic Supply used to sell it, and John Williams at
Trinity should be able to tell you if it's still available.
It's basically just a ball clay that has a lot of iron in it.
You should be able to approximate it by adding a little
iron oxide to the ball clay you normally use.

Here is a 25 year old analysis:

SiO2 54.2%
Al2O3 31.1
TiO2 1.1
Fe2O3 1.7
CaO 0.1
MgO 0.2
K2O 0.9
Na2O 0.6
LOI 10.2

Particle size (%<0.5m) 52 (same as OM#4)
% water of plasticity 38
Dry MOR 560 p.s.i.
shrinkage
linear dry 5.0%
cone 5 12%
cone 12 16%
absorption
cone 5 10
cone 12 2
fired color cone 12 gray cream
