Hi,
I recently posted this request, but got no replies, so I'll try again.
I need some information on a product called "Kiln Coat". I would like =
to convert my soft brick downdraft kiln to fire with soda. Someone =
suggested using kiln coat rather than ITC, not sure if they thought it =
worked better, or that ITC would not work for this. Would like ideas =
anyone has on this. Is it even feasible to think I could coat this kiln =
to fire it with soda, will it even work without destroying the soft =
brick? Please reply either on or off list.
Thanx in advance,

In the early days of Bath Potters Supplies, we were selling Olympic
Kilns. These came with the inside of the lid covered with what I later
discovered was called Kiln Coat. we eventually deduced that it was
smooth kiln cement diluted with 75TW Sodium Silicate (the runny one!).
This is what we still use on repaired/re-built soft brick kiln lids, to
very good effect.
I've never tried it in a salt kiln, but since I woodfire with salt
(currently in a friend's kiln) I shall paint a piece of brick and put it
in the next firing. On its own setter, just in case!
