was money, now sales, promo, insurance

Hi Gail!
Considering the foot we started off on, I wonder if you might enjoy
some thoughts on pricing, from the perspective of a potter who sells from
home, and has wrestled with the problem for 19 years.
I recently heard Mel Jacobson speak about selling from the studio as a
way to actually make enough money to pay the bills, as oppossed to paying a
gallery half.
I've been at this game awhile now, and for me , this is the only way of
selling that actually works. Sure it takes awhile to build a mailing list,
and I go to extraordinary lengths to do so, as with starting a studio tour ;
and it requires having and maintaining a space that is inviting to the
public. But getting the whole value of the piece adds up in a hurry. Ask Mel
to tell you the story of speaking up in class when the teacher came in
boasting about selling a $10,000 painting. Selling in a beautiful downtown
gallery is great for the ego, but lousy for getting the bills paid.

Hi claybair and everyone-
Thanks for welcoming me to Clayart.
Managing sales at home in the new studio have been greatly helped by the
studio tour I created in Louisville, Lafayette, Longmont and Broomfield, as
each year has brought an average of a hundred new people to the studio, and
so the mailing list is growing. We have 22 people in 18 studios now, in a
great variety of artistic disiplines, and we are in the process of creating
a non-profit corporation to make funding easier. The whole thing is an
astonishing amount of work, but in a sometimes apothetic atmosphere to art,
it's necessary to make just that much more effort to make a good show better
each year. We start in September to work toward a weekend show the following
May. Our monthly meetings run two hours minimum, and the artists have shown
an amazing degree of personal initiative to complete tasks and keep the ball
rolling.
I also have seasonal shows in the studio, summer, fall, and winter, and
I do hundred percent benefit sales for building funds for church and a radio
station in Boulder I support, both of which bring in lots of good feeling
and help to build my mailing list.
If you like I'll be happy to continue the discussion on promo work,
insurance, etc.

Hi David and all...,

I just started following this thread. A 60 year-old physicist-engineer, tech
writer, builder of Arts and Crafts houses, and 40-year part time potter, I am
turning to art in my remaining years, with hopes of becoming a person who can teach
others what those who went before have shared with me.

The practical side of this includes two big challenges: learning to promote myself,
and paying for health insurance. Do any of you Clayarters out there have any
experiences of creating groups to obtain health coverage, whether through an art
co-op/organization/club/etc? I am just joining The Potter's Council and I know that
some of these folks are working this issue, but I'm not up-to-date on progress.

Also, I need to contact the Arizona Potters Association, because I am now
co-located between the Tualatin Valley near Portland, Oregon and the Verde Valley
in Arizona. Any help would be appreciated!

Roger,
Sometimes the local Chamber of Commerce has insurace offers for members.
I also met a member of my chamber who is an insurance broker, who
seemed to be able to get good deals.
