looking for raku gloves

updated wed 14 aug 02

Millie Carpenter on sat 10 aug 02

One mothers day, my kids gave me a pair of elbow length leather gloves
that they bought in a local welding supply store. I have since replaced
them because my son borrowed them for a metalwork/blacksmith shop.
these were a suaded leather and fairly soft. I liked them because I
could unload kilns that were a bit warm :-)

Karin -

Try a welding supply store. I am sure you will get what you need.

Have you tried looking at welding supply stores? You can find gloves as well as
sleeves--all made from leather.

I have a pair of fireproof glove covers. They are made
out of the same stuff as raku gloves, but are loose
mitts instead. They fit over my good leather welding
gloves. They don't really insulate(the gloves underneath
are for doing that), but they keep the leather from
being ruined by scorching. They are durable, and much
cheaper than replacing good gloves. Low on manual
dexterity, but good enough for most of the things I do
while handling hot objects.

(I don't remember where they came from, but maybe
Grainger.)

Buy a pair of Nomex gloves from your local clay supply or safety equipment
store of choice.
