Maid O'Mud on wed 7 may 03

This upcoming Saturday, May 10th our local Artisans London Association =
is holding a fund raiser. This building/organization encompasses a =
number of guilds, including the London (Ontario) Potters' Guild.

I am in charge of the "Mud Games". I have some good ideas in mind, but =
sure could use some help. I don't want to mention ideas that I will =
use, (as there are members of the LPG who read Clayart) but as a "for =
instance": blind folded throwing - tallest pot in 3 minutes with 3 lbs =
of clay.

Please submit all ideas to the list as this should be fun! I will then =
pick out the Top 10. =20

Note - I need events for throwers, handbuilders, and general public who =
have never worked with clay.

Your help, as always, is greatly appreciated.

Please note - this is a family event, so no "dirty" ideas (sorry, =
couldn't resist the pun).

hi sam,

> Note - I need events for throwers, handbuilders,

how about giving people a small ball of clay and
telling them they have 3 minutes to make a kiln god
(which of course can be anything).

i've done this with my family and friends in order to build
up my kiln god force. the short time limit frees them
from feeling like they have to produce something that looks "good"!
one of my favorites from a nephew when he was young is:
"big fat lumpy butt" . and yes, having the makers name
them is part of the fun! (i use BFLB when i want to scare
the pots into looking good!)

have fun,
lauren

The idea you mentioned sounds great and I'm sure you'll get many more good
suggestions. Since I'll bet most of them will also involve skill and
competition (nothing wrong with that), I began thinking along a different
line - to offer one or two additional activities that would be communal,
collaborative and not put kids or the general public at a skill
disadvantage. So here's the germ of one idea -

10 Minute (or 15 Minute) Animal Parade (or "Critter Crawl")
Everyone participating (as large a group as possible) begins at once, and
taking prepared balls/lumps of clay (say, somewhere roughly between the size
of a golf ball and a tennis ball ) makes some kind of little clay animal.
Doesn't have to be beautiful or even exactly recognizable. The animals, as
soon as they're finished, get put down in some designated place, all lined
up one after the other - nose to tail fashion. All participants keep
making more animals and putting them next in the line 'til the clock runs
out. Some people may work very fast and make lots; others, especially
children may fuss over theirs if they want. The idea is simply to have fun
together and see how long the whole parade has gotten when the time is up.

Have fun,

animal tiles

I've participated in clay fest in Manitou Springs, Colorado. They have lots
of fun ideas. Some include:
1. two person throwing, one using their rt hand the other using their left.
These people must get up close and personal!
2. Team relay, 4 team members, each throws one 6" cylinder from 1# of clay
as fast ask he/she can, cuts it of the wheel, than the next person. Going
thru the team 2X (8 cylinders total). This can be 2 experiences potters
thowing 6" and 2 novices throwing 4", or any variation thereof.
3. tallest hand built or thrown pot, completed throughout the day, measured
at the end.
4. Musical wheels, everyone starts a pot with the music going, when the
music stops everyone shifts to the next wheel (to the right or left) end
person runs to the other end, and contunues throwing the pot. No prize on
this one just fun.
5. Celebrity/pro pot throwing. The local celebs (radio, tv, newspaper,
mayor, etc) are shown how to throw a pot by a local pro. Again, no price,
just fun.
6. Kiln god hand built
7. Fastest thrower of six 6" cylinders from 1# (if you have novices they can
throw 4" cylinders)
8. Child throwing area, prof. potters rotate thru this area during the day
and show kids how to throw a simple bowl.....the kids line up for a mile
9. The blind folded throwing is done with a big brown grocery sack over
one's head
10. Thowing a pot using whatever body part you wish, but NO HANDS!
There are others too, but can't think of them at the moment, maybe they have
some new ones. Tom Latka usually participates, maybe he has some different
ones.
Then at the end of the day there is a dance, appropriately named "the mud
ball". It is a totally fun day, potters and public have a great time!

For throwers, throwing with feet instead of hands is always
both funny and enlightening. Throwing with another/partner,
or "four handed throwing" the same.

For handbuilders: a 5-minute self portrait - blindfolded. It
is very interesting. Have a good time.

Hi Sam
Every good family event has a three legged race - so how about a three hand
race - probably for hand builders. Tie adjacent hands together, (or behind
their back somehow so they are forced to use one of each persons hand) and
have them build a box or something that requires co-operation.

I saw this in San Diego in October for a couple of years... it's a
lot of fun!! Probably someone else will fill you in, but this is what
I happen to recall.

Most beautiful 3 minute teapot
Pairs throwing where each uses one hand to throw the pot together.
Throwing a pot with any body part EXCEPT hands. (this is hilarious!)
Beginner throwing (someone who has never touched clay before) with a
potter as coach (I saw this using well known people from schools or
politics of news media)
The most pots in three minutes (off the hump)
The widest bowl with X lbs of clay in 3 or 5 minutes
Throw cream cheese instead of clay.
Best handbuilt pot in 5 minutes.
Largest or nicest or tallest pot with unlimited amount of clay -- an
all day affair!

Guess that's my two cents...

hi sam...

how about two person throwing - one using their right hand, the other
using their left. it's really alot of fun. it was also great for photos.
the two have to work very close together. i've done it with classmates
so we knew each other's styles pretty well, but it would be interesting
to try it with people who've never worked together.

one minute tea bowls is also fun. we did that one night at around
midnight at a workshop i attended at haystack. got some really funky tea
bowls!

Hi,
Best self portrait, make a teapot in ? minutes, guess the clay type by feel.
clay origami, how many balls of clay can you transfer on a teaspoon from one
container to another in a minute, lucky slip, (yuk! good for kids?) make a
clay frisbee and see how far you can fling it, slabs of clay pressed on to
different body parts, guess the body part! gosh this sounds like fun, I have
just inspired myself for the village fete worse than death, perhaps with
some moderations though. I cant quite see our vicar plunging his hand into a
bucket of slip and having a good feelround. He would'nt even have his go in
the stocks last year, yum, summer is coming. Ate 3 strawberries from the
greenhouse this morning.
