Try the Kalkspatz website... www.kalkspatz.de Moderator Ralf Berger or
others may know of someone in Munich or nearby who will be better able to
help.

There are basically three alternatives which all require some in-depth
research on the ground locally...

Firstly every community or "Gemeinde" in Germany offers courses and classes
in everything from aerobics to Zen Buddhism. Pottery classes or
"T=F6pferei" is very popular, so you sometimes have to get on a waiting
list for a place. They are hobby type courses for the main, but they give
you access to teachers, kilns, suppliers, etc. and of course other students
who may be able to put you on to other possibilities. Networking is
particularly important, especially in large cities like Munich.

I am not familiar with Tattenbachstra=DFe or where it is in Munich, but go
to your local Gemeinde (housed in the Town Hall =3D Rathaus), the public
library or the Volkshochschule and get a copy (usually a slim booklet) of
what they are offering for the new year starting in September. It is also
worth looking at what neighbouring Gemeinden and Volkshochschulen are
offering. For example I lived in Vaterstetten just outside Munich which had
a very good Volkshochschule, but people would travel to Haar the next
"village" for classes not on offer or even into Munich and beyond. In other
words you are no restricted to classes in your own Gemeinde where you live.

Unemployment is running very high but expenditure on public services is
decreasing in Germany, so there will be a great many people lining up for
classes. It is imperative to get your registration in as quickly as you
can.

If full-time education is a possible alternative, find the Hochschulen both
in Munich and up to a distance you are prepared to travel and look at what
they are offering. Technische Hochschulen, or Technical Colleges with their
practice-based curriculum are the ones to target. Note they will be more
technically orientated with art being formal and probably secondary part of
the curriculum.

The third way is to find a potter who will take on an apprentice combined
with day release to school, but even in Germany where apprenticeships are
still the most popular and accessible way of learning a trade, it is
difficult to find a potter without personal contacts or family connections.
Again those 4 million unemployed will be influencing the whole picture.
Sorry you have decided this difficult time to try to get going, it will not
be easy, but I wish you good luck!

Maybe if you travel out to Baldham (U-Bahn station direction Ebersberg),
walk south in the direction of Ebersberger Stra=DFe and visit the
international ceramics gallery/shop on the right (hope they are still
there), they will be able to put you in touch with some local potters. You
will find the more people you speak to, the more likely your search will be
effective and successful.

Sincerely

Janet Kaiser - thinking of Munich, Englischer Garten, the
Fu=DFg=E4ngerzone, etc. etc. with much nostalgia... Also the Vaterstetten
Volkshochschule where I took a course on Georgian cookery... Never knew
that walnuts were a requisite ingredient to absolutely every meal worth
eating until then!
