Hello Folks,
Well it's finally happening; the long repressed desire to make
ceramics/pottery has recently become an overwhelming, driving force in
my thought process. It's reached the point that I have to do something
about it....
My entire working life has been spent in a technical creation mode.
Keyword, TECHNICAL. Science, mechanical engineering, machining,
electronics, computer motion control, computer modeling of motion
control systems, etc.... - this has been my life. Even my hobbies have
adopted a purely technical nature - would you believe that I have coined
the phrase "recreational programming" for myself. At times, I have
"just for fun" programmed algorithms for computing the position of the
moon, sun and lunar phases. Ugh... what a geek.
The point here is that I have totally ignored my intuitive creative
needs. It's gotten to the point that I need to do something like this
(clay) for my mental health.
So, I'm looking for a bit of equipment to play with, namely a smallish
to medium sized kiln. I'm definitely not into paying the huge amount of
$$$$ that new kilns sell for (hey just a pile of fire bricks anyway!!!)
so I'm looking for something used (read cheap) and accessible/shippable
to the Northern California area. It doesn't have to be in great shape,
elements can be broken, timer / sitter, switches broken, missing - I
don't care. With my technical background I can repair anything - even
make it better than new. I intend to computerize the control too.(hey
can't totally ignore the technical side).
I'll eventually be looking for a wheel of some sort - same parameters
apply. Cheap, don't mind about the condition I'll fix it.
I'm also willing to trade services as well. Welding, laser cutting,
general metal fabrication, computerized machining, electronics stuff,
computer programming etc...
Can anyone help with this???
Thanks much!
-Cary
P.S. Nah... I don't want to have someone else fire for me. To me being
involved in the firing is a huge part of the process.

Cary,
What an interesting background you have! Way at the other end of the
world for my brain, but where in Northern California are you? Mike

Hello Cary!!
Welcome aboard. You are going to find this bunch always has something
interesting going on. jSounds like you have a lot to contribute, and
hopefully we can contribute something to you.
Where are you?? I know someone who has an old (1975) kiln and it was for
sale last time I spoke with them. It is a fully functioning L&L. Big
one. Very reasonable price. Would be great for converting to a
gas/electric combo kiln for some reduction firing.
P-mail me off list for more info.
Regards,
John Rodgers
