Hello,
I got your listserve address from a Google search and hope someone can offer me
some advice and help.
I am trying to help out a small group of young ceramicists in Haiti who would
like to begin a small business. Given that Haiti is in the news a lot lately,
I'm sure you know that resources on the island, especially to make art, are
limited.
They are looking for a small kiln that does not require huge amounts of
electricity [severely rationed on the island]. If anyone has a lead or can give
me some tips on products to look for or avoid, that would be greatly
appreciated.
With warmest regards,
--

Dear Margaret,
I have had limited experience with electric kilns and used them primarily
for bisque. I know only a few basics and I am sure the kiln "nerds" out
there can give you plenty of advise. Recentlly there has been some to-do
about electric kilns and their insulation. That should help.
Now for my basics:
l. Firing the kiln well below its max rated temp. will prolong the life
of the elements.
2. Kilns operating on 220 V as opposed to 110 V (I think both those
numbers have been increased by 10) are more efficient and should save you
some killowatts.
The thought occured to me that you might save electricity by once firing.
The limited amount of indingenous ceramics I have seen done in the Caribbean
was unglazed, terra cotta.

I am looking to buy an electric kiln in working
condition. I live in Baltimore but would consider
paying shipping for the right kiln at a good price.
Thanks,
Sparrow
