There seem to be a number of older people on this list, and some of you =
may be using medi-gap insurance rather than an HMO. If so, hopefully you =
are clever enough to have checked your options with other companies at =
least annually... providing you are healthy enough to qualify for =
coverage elsewhere.
If not! Listen to my mistake. I had medi-gap insurance with Standard =
Life and Accident Insurance for years. I assumed all the companies were =
competitive and close in price, and didn't struggle with doing my =
research. This year, however, I learned that my insurance rate was =
SUBSTANTIALLY higher than that of a new entrant (my age and general =
health) in the same company!=20
I suspect that people who are healthy enough to move to a cheaper rate =
will, while those who have to remain use more services and therefore =
cost more. Maybe all insurance companies follow that policy.=20
Anyway, I'm switching (to Blue Cross 'Smart Choice' which is basically a =
major medical medi-gap policy) and hope my story will be of use to =
someone.

That's certainly typical with individual health insurance. Co's offer "new
business" rates for agents bringing in new business. They guarantee the rate
for 12 months & then often sock you with a huge increase the following year.
