Hi Gang,

My first Advancer kiln shelf arrived & I was wondering if I should use it ( for the first time) on a bisque firing. I a little a concerned about introducing my shelf to what ever moister is released by the bone dry greenware even with the low overnight soaking ( with the lid propped open) I give my kiln load. Does it sound like I'm being a "wee bit" paranoid? Does anyone with Advancers use them for bisque firings?
Thanks in advance for any opinions!
Logan

I had some of the same concerns when we first got our load of ten Advancer
shelves.

If your greenware is dry enough for bisque firing, then you should not worry
about firing on the Advancer shelf.
Advancers have less than 1% absorption - which is a plus & a minus - so they
will not be absorbing moisture from the greenware.
On the plus side, glaze drips don't eat into the shelf and come off fairly
easily, even with no kiln wash.
On the minus side, if they do get wet, then it's harder to get the water
out.

Perhaps you could relieve your anxieties by following the instructions that
came with the shelf on heating the water out of it. The instructions are
also online.

We now use 20 Advancers in our gas kiln. They are stored in an unconditioned
shed. I keep them stored upright on a small wooden palette, off the concrete
floor. Have not had any problems with them.
